IPSCAN Video Demonstration Page
USD Driving Behavior Laboratory
This page contains links to some brief video clips from the IPSCAN study of age differences in the visual information processing demands of text messages displayed on the instrument panel while operating a driving simulator. They can be downloaded and played in a separate window by selecting one of the links presented below. Note, however, that these video clips are very large (in terms of megabyte transfer requirements). Hence, they are best reserved for those with very high speed Internet connections.
Description of demonstration video format:
Video from four channels was collected while each of the participants was driving the USD
fixed-base driving simulator (STISIM v. 8.0). The 1st video channel captured the
driver's position-of-gaze from the perspective of the forward-view of the road (upper-left
quadrant). The 2nd video channel captured the driver's position-of-gaze from the point of
view of the text display and response console (upper-right quadrant). The 3rd video
channel captures the driving scenario output from the simulator as viewed from the
driver's perspective (lower-left quadrant). The 4th video channel captured the
contents of the text message display (lower-right quadrant). The four channels of
video were combined via a quad-splitter and presented upon a single screen.
Addidional quantitative data detailing driving performance parameters and participant
interaction with the text message display were collected in real-time by the simulation
and message generation computers, respectively.
