Review/discussion of Hancock et al's Hedonomics paper.
Assignment: Read Reeve (2015) Chap 13 (refs) for next Tuesday; Read Plutchik (2001) fig and Fredrickson (2003) for next Thursday.

Theories of emotion: from Ekman's Basic Emotions to Lazarus' Appraisal approach.

Thursday, August 30
Plutchik's psychoevolutionary model; five components of emotion [feeling; action tendency; appraisal; motor activity; physiological arousal]; negative feedback mechanism does not apply to positive emotions (at least not directly); color-wheel/color mixing analogy; Plutchik's proposal that planned action responses to emotional stimuli may be more diagnostic and reliable than self-reports of feelings; Fredrickson's Broaden-and-Build function of positive emotions; "Undoing hypothesis" for role of positive emotions (i.e., hastens the dissapation of ANS-patterned response to negative emotions).
Assignment: prepare assigned reading presentations for next two weeks; everyone reads Ekman & Cordaro (2011).
